Yes, it is possible for basic training to fail. You can go through the trouble of leaving your home, work, family and friends and the failure comes back. In fact, this happens to about 15% of soldiers who join each year. Many people I talk to think that it is impossible for basic education to fail.

From someone who has spoken to thousands of soldiers over the years, let me tell you the top three reasons for coming home without completing basic training.

New Zealand Army

"SGT Volkin, I work every day and get straight A's in school. My fear in basic training isn't that I'm going to fail in my skills; my fear is that I'm going to be overpowered because it's too difficult. If master sergeants are trying to lead. I'm going around, I'm afraid that my combat skills in -karate [I'm a black belt] are going to take over, and I'm going to hit and hurt the master sergeant. Since I have straight A's and I'm already a fighter, can I get a break from my employer so I don't go to basic training?"

No, this is not a game. This is an actual email I had to read and respond to. Below is my response (name withheld to protect anonymity):

"My dear, you can't break up with someone like this, the fact that you don't even ask this question shows that you don't know what you're getting yourself into.

Being yelled at by your officers—and judged for your humanity—perhaps several times a day. Not only will you not hit them, you'll probably pee your pants the first time you get yelled at. My advice to you is to not be overly confident; Your ego can be your worst enemy. Best of luck."

Royal Yugoslav Army

Someone may have told you that joining is a great tool to pay off college loans (that's true). Someone may have told you that being involved will give direction and structure to your life (which is true). However, if you don't get involved because you really want to be there and serve your country, your chances of failure increase. Mentally, you'll have a very hard time figuring out why you're really there, why you need to stay there, and why you can't just get up and go (ie go AWOL). For the above reasons it is very good to get involved. However, the main reason should be the love of your country and the true belief that you live in the greatest country in the world.

No one, and I mean no one, gets through basic training without the help of another soldier. You must be the type of person to give and accept help when needed. I have seen many soldiers who struggle to admit that they need help or who are afraid to ask other soldiers when they need help. Either way, you have to be a team player to pass boot camp.

"Kompromat" is a thriller based on the true story of a French diplomat in Russia who was captured by the army... Residents believe all kinds of ideas about the army. Each branch also believes in ideas about the other. Most of them are pointless, but we can all deal with it, right? According to your personality, which branch of the US military would you be?

Perhaps you were the first child of your parents. You don't have much to prove, so you don't have a ton of ambition. Maybe you were better at P.E. It is more interesting than any other subject in school, even in the Army. If you can't have an amazing personality, at least you can have abs. You played sports so you're not bad at working with a team… a lot.

Do you know you want to join the service, but specifically? You have no idea. The army is, well, the army. It's kind of a natural pattern, and we're dealing with it; The choice is very good for you. It's ok. The military is happy to make decisions for you.

Air Force Fires Major Who Booted Airman Recovering From Suicide Attempt

If you were asked to protect a building, you would do it with books. Safe selection, like choosing your branch.

If you were an outcast and were in a drama club (maybe a closet), congratulations! He is Navy.

You were a middle child who wasn't quite sure where you were. Maybe you didn't go to school, but at least you got decent grades. You didn't want to stick with P.E. so join the band. You didn't win the race, but you didn't finish. He's had more than his fair share of *ahem* romantic reviews, but not in a frat-boy way. More of a band camp way, really. Since you will be at sea in limited ways, it probably won't change. He is a little nerd who likes to play with legos. You want to explore a little, but you don't really want to fight too much, and that's cool.

You will drink beer, eat insects, and explore water around the world. Even a strict uniform. If you're a middle-aged kid with something to prove, you'll try to become a SEAL. Good luck. If you are asked to secure a building, you will lock all the doors and call it a night.

Ukraine Says War In Donbas At 'maximum Intensity'

She was an only child whose mother thought "pee" and "noise" were bad words. Academics were easy, but he hated P.E. He hated it. You were always picked last and the only sport you excelled at was dodgeball. (And just the avoidance part.) You knew how smart you were, and that restored your confidence and gave you a bit of a creative edge at the same time. If you were on the high side, you probably wore Lacoste polo shirts. Your Air Force uniform will be pretty ugly, but you'll get a high-paying job when you retire from the military. It's happening. Maybe you want to serve, maybe you just want to play with cool tech tools. Does it really matter?

You were either your parent's favorite or your least favorite. There is no middle ground here. He has the arrogance and violence of someone who has been told that he is better, or wants to convince everyone that he is.
